Fire Mitigation

Defensible space in California

In an effort to strengthen community resilience against wildfires, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) has created a fire mitigation program that and have  partnered with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to develop a state home hardening initiative. This initiative focuses on retrofitting, hardening, and creating defensible space for homes at high risk to wildfires, particularly in high social vulnerability communities. Financial assistance is provided to low- and moderate-income households for home-hardening activities. The development and implementation of the Program is overseen by Cal OES and CAL FIRE, authorized by Governor Gavin Newsom through Assembly Bill 38 in 2019.
